On the week of Aleister Crowley’s 137th birthday, happening October 12th, I thought I would take the time to highlight one artist working in the same shock culture vein the iconic occultist was best known for.
m1thr0s, the head of The Abrahadabra Institute introduced me to Chris at a private meeting of Left Hand Path practitioners. It was held at a quaint, creaky and dark wood-paneled teahouse that resembles the inside of a pirate tavern in New Orleans perhaps, or Baba Yaga’s cabin.
Charming and softspoken, Chris pulled out and showed some of his newest designs to us and I squealed with delight to see “Satanic Missionary Society” and “HAIL SATAN!” printed in bold black and white next to modern symbols used in airports.

Chris Allert, or the Anti-Chris as he is known about town, hand makes the most precious, lovingly hand-made little devotional and evilangelical materials dedicated to the dark lord you have ever seen.
The next week, sandwiched between m1thr0s and couple of members of the Temple of Set, Chris pulled out some more of his art that he had promised to show us. Chris explained ”I got interviewed by KOMO news, and I told them that the first thing you learn about the Bible is how the snake wants us to have knowledge like god, and, I mean…that didn’t sound that bad. I just told them maybe Satan isn’t such a bad guy.” I started cracking up laughing, imagining the look on viewer’s faces as he dropped that bomb on them.
KOMO News Report: Olympia Man turning heads with his ‘Satanic’ art
My eyes took note of the incredible little details and fine typography, as professional as a top of the line design studio. On black construction paper, with carefully rounded corners, I found the inverted pentacle and cross, all beautifully hand embossed with silver ink. There were tickets with barcodes, some printed on hand-cut carnival tickets as if you evoke a modern nod to Anton Lavey. Some of the tickets says “Remove this to Invoke Demons” creating a sort of infernal Alice in Wonderland surrealism. Others give you a number to the Satanic Prayer line, which Anti-Chris maintains.

Distributing flyers for Satan with dedication and passion requires a lot of energy and a lot of patience. Some of the public reacts with fear and paranoia, sometimes even hatred. Anti-Chris documents all of this activity with the detachment of an anthropologist, coolly observing the behavior of those he wishes to win over to the dark side. He photographs a janitor at Evergreen and notes it with the giggle-worthy caption “This employee of The Evergreen State College takes down our flyers when he thinks nobody is looking.”
Other incidents get a bit more…personal. After removing all of the Satanic material, a disturbed viewer leaves a note:

Undaunted, Chris puts up more material, and creates a reprisal flyer to accompany it, something he calls “Satanic Rapid Response to Hate Crime” which includes a prayer for the bigots and a wry note:

Other fun events he creates to delight local left-hand path initiates are spring egg hunts with bottled demons and Satanist swag hidden in colorful plastic eggs, and invitations to seek out his free wares around the city and at Last Word Books, one of the bastions of free-speech and tolerance in a surprisingly intolerant cityscape of America.
Chris maintains The Satanic Missionary Society and hosts Gathering of Satanists at The Olympia Center every 4th Wednesday of the month (updates on the date and room are posted to Worship Satan)
