So, your house is haunted. If you’ve tried to find advice on what to do in this situation, I’m sure you’ve found that most occultists have no idea what they are talking about. Maybe you’ve been told to burn sage or toss salt around the house, or worse, pray to Jesus. Forget everything you thought you knew. These solutions are often temporary and often completely disconnected from any kind of right practice.

In the interest of offering real protective measures to our members, I have decided to write this guide, as it is the most common query on various occult forums, and possibly the only question outsiders to the arcane arts bring to the table, driven as they are by desperation to rid themselves of the plague within their own homes.

Our É-gida Magister, Susurrator, (Commentarii Susurratoris) who is Welsh, says that unsheathing a blade is the surest customary way to get rid of any resident evil.

What is a ghost? I have spent my entire life studying this question, and have come to the conclusion that they are a function of consciousness itself as the dying construct fades away back into the Yin flux. Becoming a true ghost, in the classical sense of the word, as an unhappy, undead, thinking entity, is the result of a failure on some part to attain to starhood, and even a failure to attain to Manhood, which to our Mutational Alchemy students is equivalent to the third flux value, Jen. Ghosts are of the Yin element, the blackness of memory, creativity, possibility. It is also the flux value that rules over rot, recession, submission, receptiveness and the act of fading away, which ghosts seem to be defined by.

The struggle defines the opposite of a ghost, the soul that reincarnate or rarely, achieves transcendence, is a being that strives, and at the very least, loves. To love and to strive with a burning heart is the surest way to avoid slipping into the comfortable coils of Death. So a ghost has failed in some fairly significant ways during its life and towards the end. It is well known that anyone can avoid becoming a ghost with just a little bit of training and discipline during the retirement years, so the fact that we find many old persons dying and becoming ghosts signifies a major failure on the part of world religions. The ones that hold on the longest seem to be clinging to the last fragments of the struggle that allow them to remain in the world of Man, or Jen.

Commonly we find ghosts that are angry about something – this ferocity of spirit is enough Yang to keep them connected to our world. The resignation is what finally does them in. What happens to a ghost that gives up, then, as we see in so many popular tales, where a murder is resolved and the ghost can “go in peace” is that the ghost has nothing to keep it striving anymore. My guess is they are ultimately destroyed, nothing but their atoms remain, and these are reclaimed by the Supreme Ultimate. They are erased. If a being can get trapped in such a situation, and this is the only motivation keeping them alive – these petty wants and needs, they are worthless to whole universe. The universe doesn’t need inflexible abominations, it needs – from us at least – stars.

There is no hereafter for them, but there is annihilation, which is the only right and merciful thing to be done. If a consciousness manages to find itself in this fallen state, there is something wrong with it. It must be destroyed. It isn’t really our responsibility, but it is in all of our best interests to annihilate them cleanly. It’s possible these things can only exist due to the rotten nature of human existence and the consciousness mess we’ve built up on this planet. There really is much we don’t actually know about these things, but by examining the fundamentals of the elements we can conclude many useful things about them.

So, ghosts, phantoms, whatever they are called, are a Yin construct. We are dealing with a subset of Yin energy at all times. What purifies and elevates Yin? Yang, of course. Jen just tends to elaborate on existing conditions, similar to the way psychedelic drugs flex our minds to create fabulous visions. This makes the in-between flux (Jen) both wonderful and mesmerizing, as well as, and this is no exaggeration, the source of all the problems in this universe. But there is nothing to be done about that. We are addicted to this “Life” thing and the only way out is through, this is the mandate from the highest authority.

Ghosts do not last forever. There is only so long that they can hold on in the face of the natural corrosive nature of the Valley Female (Yin) and so we do know that nature has its own way of dealing with these pests, even if it is not handled as urgently as we rapid Jen constructs would like. Worryingly enough, they seem to have the ability to affect the physical world and cause illness. Both Yin and Yang can cause illness in the wrong doses, so what we are seeking to do here is to manage that balance at all times.

Ugly faces work – gargoyles, scary masks, the like. This is the reason gargoyles and fantastic masks of fierce Dharma Guardians and statues of angry deities were invented. Keeping such masks or statues around will repel random lost souls, but more stubborn ghosts who have been there a while will surely become wise to this trick. Luckily for us, The Abrahadabra Institute’s methodologies afford us an incredible and perpetually effective tool in the fight […]Continue this article

With fall fast approaching our thoughts turn to the ancient Rites of Eleusis. Entheogens are an honored part of The Abrahadabra Institute’s traditions and we will be spending the remainder of the summer discussing various aspects of the shamanic path. The central figures in the Rites of Eleusis centered around Demeter and Persephone, and took place in the Spring, while initiates were inducted in September of the following year. The Greek Rites of Eleusis were eventually subsumed and supplanted by the Graeco-Roman Rites of Mithras, a Persian import with close parallels to antediluvian Assyrian religious rights, seen in particular with the twin gods Cautes and Cautopates who accompany Mithras. We find the twin gods reflected in the Akkadian-Assyrian-Sumerian figures of Laz and Nergal, predating Mitra in Persia by thousands of years.

A later reproduction by Faucher-Guden of an original tablet depicting the god above and behind the scene as a lion, protecting the goddess Ereshkigal (Arabic: Allat) Queen of the Underworld who is shown suckling two lion cubs, probably Laz and Nergal. This underscores the popular ancient mystery of the eternal Goddess producing and reproducing with the dying God in an infinite cycle.

faucher2

The rear of the tablet reveals the form of Nergal (and Laz) as being that of the two chimera supporting the serpents on the Ningishzidda grail, and of Pazuzu.

These warrior twins are also depicted in one of the ancient Middle-East’s constellations. Nergal had some connotations of Abrasax in his symbological associations as a rooster, an aggressive warrior-like animal according to firsthand Hebrew historical record, and the pair’s other symbolic animal, the lion, is closely associated with Mithraism in the godform Zervan or Aion. Nergal’s cult had died out by the time the Persian Mitra had become popularized but there is a thread of continuity visible to syncreticists in the nature of the details. Mithraeums, for example, are located underground reflecting his connection to the underworld, ergot may be a hallucinogen but it also causes gangrene to develop due to the restriction of the blood vessels at extremities (Nergal is a god of the underworld and pestilence like his close parallel or possibly his twin Laz or Pazuzu). For the Greeks who had been practicing the Rites of Eleusis for two millienia, these attributes naturally flowed with the narrative of Persephone being abducted by Hades. Therefore as the patriarchial age dawned the torch of growth and reason passed from the Mother to the Father. Demeter was all about agriculture, and with that mystery fully explored the attention of Mankind began focusing on political and social structure. Mithras is a god of contracts, friendship and love, but it is no secret it was a drug cult. possibly utilizing the red and white fly agaric mushroom inspiring the colors and nature our modern Solstice Sun God pater, Santa Claus. The death of the two millenia old Rites of Eleusis to the more masculine Rites of Mithras reflects the passage of the Aeons as defined by Aleister Crowley, from Mother Goddess (Demeter & Persephone) to father God (Mithras) and finally our current Aeon beginning in 1904 of Ra Hoor Khut as revealed by the Book of the Law, Liber al vel Legis.
Now it should be clear to anyone who has read this far that drugs have been with us for a long time, in fact they form the very foundation of Western Civilization, the greatest civilization on earth at this time (See Mushrooms, Myth and Mithras by Carl Ruck). I want to start by talking to people who have never ventured into the realm of psychotropic substances. There’s a lot of scare propaganda out there. Some drugs are completely worthy of their terrifying reputation, such as methamphetamine, various deliriants, barbituates, benzodiazepenes and others. Quite a few have been wrongly accused of  evil effects, when in fact they may hold the cures for many diseases, such as the recently redeemed Cannabis plant. (See Dr Sanjay Gupta’s article “Why I Changed My Mind on Weed at http://www.cnn.com/2013/08/08/health/gupta-changed-mind-marijuana/

wildcannabis
Cannibas Plant “New York Sour Diesel”
Right now it is easier than ever to access exciting and legal substances. Some of these are dangerous and havn’t been looked at by the FDA yet, so caution is absolutely necessary, and in fact should always be your companion when playing around with the gateways and machinery of the mind. On the other hand, ignoring these tools and failing to learn about the tricks our mind plays on us and what it is capable of, is an even more dangerous mistake. Occultists especially ignore this area of study at their own peril.
If safety is a concern, and one lives in a place where cannabis is legal, this is one of the safest ways to begin experimenting with entheogenic practice and it is quite respectable in and of itself classically. Cannabis can be a trickster though, and not all highs are pleasant I must warn you. It can cause paranoia, drowsiness and many strange unsettling sensations and distortions to occur in the mind. Weed was legalized here in Washington State just over a dozen and a half moons ago, and the effects on our city have been quite interesting. People seem calmer and happier. Maybe it’s just my perception but with so many weed stores around all of that product has to be going somewhere.
Because drug laws are focused on the chemical makeup of the drug that is to be restricted, chemical factories have begun producing substances that have never before existed. By the time laws can catch up, the factories have already invented a new substance. Many of them mimic authentic Berkeley LSD and other famous drugs which don’t exist in the black market anymore due to the “success” of the War on Drugs. Some of them are dangerous because they cause hallucinations bordering on delirium. Both synthetic legals and regulated natural drugs may be purchased online at Shayanashop.com, a company based in the Netherlands (where the drugs they sell are completely legal). If a user wants anonymity they’ll need to use Tor and Bitcoin to access the deepweb markets. Many guides exist online to show a user how to do this, I won’t go into it here.
There’s a common misconception among occultists who are “clean” that the plant kingdom doesn’t have anything to add to their practice. Ignoring the fact that mankind has never existed in a vacuum and is constantly being bombarded with the effects of all life that it consumes, they say that there is nothing they cannot achieve without drugs. This is a false perception and should be refuted. I was taught and practiced magick from the time I was a toddler until I was twenty seven years old when I accidently encountered the effects of Datura stramonium. This is a very advanced plant with the traits of a delirient so it is considered to be very dangerous as it makes it nearly impossible to separate the illusion from reality. When ingested it’s also highly poisonous, but the skin transfer method filters out the deadliest compounds. Witches have rubbed its essence on their skin for centuries to “fly”. Even though this time honored method is saffer, one still has to deal with the dangers of tachychardia from the other elements in the chemicals of the plant. Strength varies widly from season-to-season, from one genetic strain to another.  Despite the dangers and some unpleasantness, it opened my eyes to the remarkable and indispensable effects of psychedelic substances. Fortuitously I was corresponding with m1thr0s at the time and using his mirrors. As world class expert on shamanic practice he was able to correspond to me a safe passage through the terrain of the delirium state I found myself in. Graham Hancock talks about a firsthand experience that is useful in this reading from his book Supernatural.

The mirrors of Mutational Alchemy are useful when sober, but take on an unimaginable dimension of power and authority over the mind when indulging in psychotropic substances of just about any kind. There’s really no point in bothering to study m1thr0s’s mirrors if you’re not going to commit right now to eventually viewing it on a psychotropic substance, for they are not complete without soma. Passage to realms beyond the abyss are within the grasp of occultists like never before using m1thr0s’s keys. Diagrams of the Sephiroth alone are not able to catapult one to union with Ain Soph Aur. People should be clamoring to utilize and possess the Adam Kadmon as revealed by The Abrahadabra Institute doctrine but they don’t understand it yet. If they understood anything about the Rites of Eleusis they would possess the wisdom to appreciate the gravity and power of the Adam Kadmon and Abrahadabra mirrors.  The biggest hurdle standing between the people of general Occultism and Abrahadabra is the psychotropic link. Once you partake in the true soma, a dimensional element kicks in that changes everything about the art of Mutational Alchemy. The mirrors dance – fake “mandalas” and most “visionary art” fade into dull mediocrity in comparison to the technical perfection of these mirrors. The Mutational Alchemy mirrors reveal themselves in the light of entheogenic practice as the keys to the doors of universal consciousness.  None of the visionary art of today can match it.
Make no mistake, the TwinStar and the Diamond can be used in everyday life and be very effective, but to truly understand their special importance one must see them on their own turf. We are not here to hold the hands of people unwilling to venture into such forbidden territory, they’d be best off sticking to their old ways and leave us alone. I issue this statement (and for some, revelation) only because to many people who would otherwise know what to do next, the mirrors do not make sense and they are unlikely to ever be anything special unless they are possessed of extraordinary sensitivity to power. Drugs, especially psychedelic drugs can open the floodgates to power and magick like nothing else can. No excuses can ever substitute for their physical power and force in activating the phenomenon that the Body of Light is famous for. The mirrors extend the high for hours longer, and often days longer than the drugs normally allow for, signifying that the drugs themselves are only acting as booster rockets for takeoff. The phenomenon you will encounter is actually the body of light in action.
The game that occult authors play concerning their neglect of entheogenic substances is dangerous and dishonest, and it should not be tolerated. We live in a world populated by vast numbers of species, and our consumption of lifeforms is a time honored tradition that must include the sacred psychedelic substances found in some plants. It is not authentic Hermeticism if we are willing to partake of the wisdom of the ancient Greek rites which included drugs. It should go without saying from this point on that The Abrahadabra Institute is not an organization for puritanical idealists bent on distorting Hermeticism to suit their own shallow views of the world based on misguided modern ideology.

What Is it Like?

It’s very difficult to convey what it feels like to partake in the sacraments to someone who has never ventured that far into their practice. Many songs, poems and scripts have been written about the experience, directly and allegorically.  There are two main camps for drug users: the sacred and the profane. Both paths are useful in their own way and both can be dangerous. Black Sabbath’s The Wizard, Fleetwood Mac’s Gold Dust Woman, Sia’s Chandelier, and The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face” are all discussing elements of profane drug use, aligned with the ancient cultural zeitgeist of Dionysus/The Bacchante. Like these songs, drugs were long associated with the symbol of the mad and wild woman, sometimes wrapped in the skin of a leopard, the beast of Dionysus, and sometimes accompanying a live leopard while carrying a bushel of barley or some other symbol of entheogens used in the cult. She is something akin to the infamous Iboga drug god mentioned in the earlier video by Graham Hancock.

Bouguereau,_Bacchante_sur_une_panthère,_1855

Sacred drug use has just as long a history as profane drug use, and the two often overlap in society classically. However the modern age has seen a sharp decline in ritual paired with entheogens, and this has left mankind a state of perilous decay. Confucius, one of the great advocates for the I Ching believed that ritual was the binding fabric of mankind, that it served to unite them in civility and reasoned discourse. This idea echoes the goals of The Enlightenment with a special Eastern perspective, and one which we do not have to reject as threatening to Western values. Problematically it is common in the West today not to fuss about with unnecessary things, and ritual is often seen as unnecessary. This could not be further from the truth, considering that ritual can be the highest form of communication available to us, and just as Confucius believed, it does in fact unite mankind in civility when it is done with grace and beauty and behind a cause that is good and righteous. Ritual should not be left only to the government, military and the religious right, but should be adopted and adapted by all men to suit their beliefs, fancy and needs.
In the case of the Magus, the ritual must include entheogens from time to time, minimally once a year if they are to be considered serious about this work at all. This rite should bear little resemblance to the mostly useless act of dropping acid at a festival or smoking weed in front of the tv. Instead much care, focus and planning should go into setting up the area in which you will indulge in the time with the sacred. I will go into this in greater detail in my next article.

the mutational alchemy tarot: sephiroth spread

spread02
Sephiroth spread with astrological correspondences and Da’ath by m1thr0s. Background photo by Izi Ningishzidda on location at The Abrahadabra Institute, Olympia, Washington, Winter 2014.

To many people the Sephiroth spread seems large and intimidating, but it’s important to remember it’s the same size as the Sword and Shield or Celtic Cross. Sure, you need to memorize a little Hebrew and the ordering of the Sephiroth to pull this one off from memory, but it’s not that hard. I started using this spread spontaneously after my studies required that I memorize the ordering of the Sephiroth for pathworking. Don’t be afraid to play with Kabbalah and the Sephiroth. Let m1thr0s and I tell you as a Jew you are welcome to it and don’t let anybody tell you it is anything less than your human inheritance if you want to claim it.

On this handy sheet which you are welcome to print out, the Sephiroth are denoted by their classical planetary attributions from antiquity. The symbols m1thr0s created to represent the astrological signs are very important and have their own secrets. For example, the symbol for Terra or Earth has points that are at a 23.5 degree angle – the same as the axis of the Earth in relation to the sun. It’s also got a vesica pisces in the center, the universal symbol of unity and the vagina and it’s a symbol for the swastika, a traditional symbol of the goddess Kali. The little dot in the center resembles the eye of Siva or the All-seeing eye.

When m1thr0s put all of these symbols and meanings together in one killer talisman for Earth, I was really fucking impressed. I immediately disposed of all of the concept art I had done on the astrological signs and gave it over to him. I also love how Ma’at or Saturn, at Binah, The Sorrowing Great Black Mother looks like a huge pregnant lady opening her arms to give the viewer a hug.

So when you start this reading you’ll decide whether or not to do Earth Ascending or Heaven Descending. These are the two fluxes. Earth ascending tends to be violent, unstable and chaotic, like the Kundalini Shakti, while Heaven Descending is steady, ordered and logical like Mercury or Logos. We’ve numbered this chart in the Heaven Descending order, as it is more common. You may want to use Earth ascending for help in attacking a difficult problem or situation which requires shaking things up. Just reverse the chronological order for Earth Ascending.

A note about Da’ath: You can cast Da’ath first or last. I usually cast it last. It’s not a Sephiroth so it doesn’t get a number, but it is important. Think of it as like a non-Sephiroth that acts as the seat of God, or if you like, the Cosmic Vagina. It’s called the Seat of Knowledge and it can also be thought of as the fruit of the tree of the knowledge.

  1. Ruling Power or Energy.

Kether.  Neither wholly male or female, it’s transliterated as “Crown”, and the brilliant white gold light of Kether represents the highest you can go on the tree, the “star” of the yuletide tree you put on the top of your evergreen for the holiday. It’s not the absolute highest, that doesn’t begin until you go even higher into Ain, Ain Soph, and Ain Soph Aur. These are on the map where Abrahadabra is concerned. (Abrahadabra Grid Proofs, The Abrahadabra Institute, m1thr0s www.abrahadabra.com, The Book of Mirrors) but we don’t address them in this spread. Consider them to be acting through Kether which is synonymous with the all-good well-wishing Will of Heaven or The Dragon. The position of Kether will tell you what the primary energy of the situation or person is. It dominates all of the other cards in the spread and if it’s a bad card of any sort, examine “afflictions” elsewhere in the tree. Otherwise it may indicate the need for a major change in thinking and behavior. When in doubt, remember you can ALWAYS cross a card you don’t understand, with another card. You can also do an I Ching reading in order to solve any confusion.

  2. The Wise All-Father, Logic

This position can illuminate the logic and rationality of the person or situation, and also signify one’s atttitude towards men and career relationships. Chokmah is called Wisdom in English. It also represents the grey All-Father and is the top commanding Sephiroth of the male pillar. The energy here is powerful and wise of course, able to discern between things and manifesting perspective from the Yang side of universal energy. Bright, logical, thinking, communicating active warm and passionate energy resides here. A good symbological representation for it in the archetypal library of humankind is Mercury or Logos. It can represent males in the situation or in the person’s life. Adventure, plans,  fun and technology are all ruled by this Sephiroth. There is a chance it is talking about a marital proposal. He also rules over words, while Binah rules over sound. It can talk about the relationship to society and to males, and looks at the big picture that can be difficult to see in the sandstorm of emotion and detail. Ouranos, also known as King George, is the ruling planet. This planet is all about eccentricity and futuristic ideas. He’s the guy that guides us into a better place, the world we can only dream of. All in all you should trust this guy because he has a better way of doing things, but emotions can often blind us to what is correct dharma. Chokmah is the aspect of the masculine side of universe that walks besides us when we are afraid or facing a challenge that requires thoughtfulness and courage.

  3. The Understanding All-Mother, Emotions

This position can illuminate deep seated emotions influencing the person or situation especially in relationship to loved ones. Binah is called Understanding in English, she’s the Great Black Mother in the East. We know this because in Kabbalah she’s the “mother of mothers”, as the mother to the Shekinah or personification of the wife/house of Hashem. This also applies to the Sanatana Dharma concept of the overarching Devi principle who stands above all Devis. Also known as The Sorrowing and the Great Sea of Binah. She’s the All-Mother and is associated with learning and teaching. Life itself is precious as it teaches and she grows. She is always virgin and whore. This is the last of the three supernals, forming the squat triangle that is called The Cave of the Ancients. Stillness, peace, justice, emotions, dreams and intuition are ruled by Binah. There is a Jewish saying that says “The mother understands what the child does not say” This position can reveal emotional issues in the subconscious or problems with women or ideas about women. It can also reveal hidden injustices. Saturn, her ruling planet has long been associated with justice, karmic repercussions and the gods of time, as a woman it is closely associated to the goddess Ma’at. Binah is the feminine aspect of universe that is with us to support us when we are suffering, either emotionally or physically, especially where there is injustice or sorrow.

  4. Generous, Helping and Kind Actions, Relationships

This position can advise how to rule the situation. Chesed is properly translated as Merciful-Benevolence, but it’s often given other titles like Love, Mercy and Kindness. It’s got an alternate name: Gedulah, which means Majesty. He is the ruler and is signified by a scepter, where Geburah his partner is signified by a sword. A good deity association is Elohim or any of the thunder-related sky gods, Rudra, Zeus, etc. It’s the middle part of the male pillar and there is also a saying to go with it and its partner, Geburah, Severity. “A turn of severity must be followed by a turn of kindness”. Chesed is all about stability and joy, taking care of things as they are and preventing misery and displeasure. If afflicted it may mean someone is being too lenient, or laws are not strict enough, but it can also mean tyranny and overstepping one’s bounds of authority. Its ruling planet, Jupiter, is bombastic and not interested in the small stuff. Its energy asks us to ignore details that arn’t important and forces us by its sheer size and presence to pay attention to “reality”. The magick of Jupiter can offer extreme joy and pleasure or it can draw our higher selves away from the task at hand. It’s also associated with sex and reproduction, but in the physical sense, down to genes and DNA, and not past lives and karma.

  5. Restrictive, Punishing, Just and Warlike Actions and Karma.

This position can advise on what actions to take. Geburah doesn’t mess around. She is the Law and Management. She’s red like blood and has Mars in the palm of her hand. This planet carries out the orders of Binah above her in the name of justice. What causes sorrow must be eliminated. This is far more complicated than one would think, as we can see from the state of the world today. Geburah can be set against the querent, representing a challenge, but it can also be benign. The reasoning of Geburah rules the chaos in Hod below and it also regulates Tiphareth. This area of the tree can indicate past karma influencing the situation, or some injustice being perpetrated that must be answered for eventually. It can also have to do with war and conflicts, soldiers or trials. There is a connection with the feminine as well. Even though Binah is the mother, Geburah can be considered the womb, where Chesed is the consort father. Geburah is also the proper seat of the Prince of Darkness which is probably why it’s been earmarked as the secret entry to the underworld by Satanists. The reason for this is not only the womb connection but that fact that it’s ruled by Mars, so it can be depicted as a knight in a chariot going to battle. The chariot is the uterus. Crowley depicted this scene on his Chariot card, as a golden knight decorated with the stars of Assiah.  Geburah is associated with the transition from spirit to the physical world, Karma and past lives in a newborn.

  6. The Future to Be, True Will, Higher Self, Good Direction

Tiphareth translates as Beauty and it connects to all of the other Sephiroth with the exception of Malkuth. Many of the attributions spouted about Tiphareth are merely incorrect assumptions, mostly perpetrated by Cabalists (Christian Kabbalah practitioners.) It is called The House of the World to Come in the Bahir, and represents a perfected and complete world template which Malkuth is bound to follow. It is also the throne of light, so that adherents of Luciferianism may find it interesting, but since Lucifer is associated with the moon in the Greek language it is more properly the domain of Yesod, which may be considered the Alembic that filters the data from Tiphareth to Malkuth.  The position will indicate the current aspect of the energy and information coming from Kether that is at play in the situation, relationship or activity in question. Consider that this position is always positive no matter how weird or bad the card seems to you, it is basically good in this spot. For example, if you get Debauch you may need to live it up a little more in your life.

  7. Endurance, Challenges, A Journey, Romantic Relationships,Trials

Netzach is associated with the planet Venus and translates as “Victory”. I used to keep getting “bad” cards here and I thought I had an affliction in Netzach, but it was just a failure to comprehend that this sephiroth is all about the current challenge that needs to be addressed. Consider that it’s the quest given out by Tiphareth in order to achieve its splendid state. It can especially address problems in romantic relationships as it is ruled by Venus. Love is often a key to winning the war revealed here.

  8. Art, Creativity, Scholarly Pursuits, School, Non-Romantic Relationships

Hod, is properly associated to Mercury and is defined by its orange and electrical energy. Ritual, art, religion, scholarly and intellectual activity are constants here. The act of creating a representation of invisible concepts is the property of Hod.  On the tree Hod represents the left thigh and Netzach the right.

  9. Tomorrow, Spirit Manifesting, Entheogens, Possibilities

Yesod is called Foundation, which is important to us in the sense that Malkuth isn’t the Foundation of Man. The procession of the Aeons marks the steady progress Man is making towards the glorious future of Tiphareth where everything will be perfect and ecstatic. This position will indicate actions or events that are coming into being. Right now they are only present in the intimations from fate or they are on the horizon about to come into being. The card here will indicate something that is already happening or will happen very shortly.

  10. Present Circumstances and the Physical Reality

Malkuth is finally the present enviroment surrounding the querent and is a matter of fact summary of things as they stand in the relationship, activity or venture. It also represents the querent’s physical self but not the higher self. Remember the entire Sephiroth is YOU.

  11. Mystery, Knowledge, Magick

The mysterious non-Sephira Da’ath called the Seat of Knowledge can be placed at the beginning or at the end of the spread. It can be a hidden ally or power, and the card will tend to be magnified in this area. If it’s afflicted, consider flushing Da’ath by actual banishment rituals of one’s choice, especially helpful would be the TwinStar ritual or the Da’ath hack.

Sometimes called the Celtic Cross, here we use the less common name for the spread, Sword and Shield. In this context the right vertical pillar represents the sword, and the diamond shape formed by the left pattern represents the shield.

One of the most widely known and used spreads, the Sword and Shield is a very useful general purpose spread. It’s better suited for situations than it is for analyzing people themselves. The complex Sephiroth spread is better at analyzing personalities.

  1. The first card in the spread represents the querent – either you or someone you’re reading about. If it is a card with a person on it, one should consider the figure to be one and the same with a querent. If there is no figure or that doesn’t make any sense, it could represent the thoughts dominating the querent.

  2. The crossing card. The represents the dilemma, person, or situation facing the querent – the person holding the shield and sword. If it’s an enemy this should be fairly clear. If using reversals it’s important to remember that the card is normally read as being about go either way. You can certainly interpret it with reversals but there is a reason why it is laid sideways. It represents the changeability of fate.

  3. This position represents the past. This card can have a strong effect on the other cards, so even if there are difficulties if this card is auspicious it slants the reading towards a more manageable scenario. If it’s an unlucky card one should take this into account and advise corrections based on past behaviors that aren’t working for the querent. In the context of the Shield, it represents that path which the querent is already in the habit of following. One should consider if they wish to repeat the past or not.

  4. The malleable future. It is the right hand path, the more difficult path often, requiring the use of the Sword. Although sometimes it will proclaim the querent should keep to “steady as she goes” if the past and future cards are dramatically different, changes should be considered.

  5. The path we are on, and the enviromental factors we can’t see. The querent could be about to trip on a banana peel or they might have solid footing. Whatever it is will affect the situation in front of the querent.

  6. Above we have the higher will and unseen forces of the superconscious. There are other wills at play in the world and some of them are helpful, others are adversarial. This card will reveal what is acting over the situation. Changing this requires higher powers as well, but this will mean something different to everyone.

  7. The hilt of the sword is the querent’s handle on all of the other aspects of this pillar.

  8. The left side of the sword represents one’s external enviroment, things that have nothing to do with the querent or the situation but which can change everything about the outcome. It can also hold secrets about hidden paths and ways of doing things the querent hasn’t looked at yet, especially if the outcome is poor.

  9. The right side of the sword represents the ideas, thoughts and plans of the querent which are being used in that given moment. If the outcome is poor, consider this card carefully.

  10. The point of the card, the essence of the element of Air and Jen. This card is the most important card in the spread, if it’s a good outcome card, such as the Hierophant or the Emperor, even if all of the other cards are horrible the final outcome will be a positive one.

As always consider coincidental pairings, strong elemental showings, such as an unusual multitude of Pentacles, or many ATU, or many male or female figures. In meditation one may visualize oneself as a figure carrying a sword and shield on a kind of road, on their mission. Pay attention to what kind of enviroment populates as well as the details on both pieces of equipment, as well as the appearance of the object or lifeform in front of you.

the magickal name

My friends in the occult have often told me they don’t have a magickal name, or they’re not really satisfied with the one they chose. I’ve helped many friends and acquaintances choose a magickal name and wanted to write a helpful guide for neophytes or even self-taught journeymen occultists who might not know how to do this.

It is easy to outgrow a name after achieving success in your pathworking, and it’s also natural. One should remember that once you have a name you never really lose its potential or magick. Holding on to a name after it has become boring, repugnant or corny to you without replacing it can signify stagnation. When you find a name that represents your will and your role of participation in the great work, you will feel a sense of confidence and ease with it, and you should feel powerful, calm or elated when you tell others your name. (feelings will differ depending on your focus in life.)

 Why Choose a Magickal Name?

It lets you choose who you are. You don’t get to choose your name when you’re born. You can shape your whole future with a name. Try it and you’ll see people treat you differently. In the Kabbalistic numerology, Gematria, each letter has a value which can form correspondences to other words and a number. It’s believed to have an effect on ones day to day affairs in manners which are not insignificant – it can shape and alter destiny.

Name changes are especially common in Hollywood where a person’s name is synonymous with their wares – its the box they frame their image in. This does not normally qualify as a magickal name, since most Hollywood name changes are done on the basis of impressing other people with their uniqueness or affiliation with a certain culture, rather than as a conscious act of Will. A well crafted magickal name is also viable across time and space universally, rather than just being a soundbyte intended towards local popular culture.

Encryption with AIK BQR, the Gematria of the Nine Chambers, or other proven numerology counts which bear significance are best. For example, Aleister Crowley chose the name Perdurabo, Latin for “I will endure until the end” in keeping with the Golden Dawn tradition of choosing a motto as a name and its magickal number in AIQ BQR form of Gematria is 557. In some societies the name is shortened to its initials and preceded by Frater or Soror.

As an example, m1thr0s noticed his chosen magickal name is a loaded name – he started getting into all kinds of irrational conflicts with people after taking it. It’s a very masculine name. The idea of completion is kind of inferred in the name because Tau is the omega point – the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet. This sort of name is the name of a closer – which is what m1thr0s is – someone who ties up loose ends and destroys old paradigms.

So words are powerful. This is what Abrahadababra itself hints at, being a magickal word used in curing illness. A force lies behind every word you speak or every act you engage in. The energy is happening while you are beginning to create your name.

Conversion to some traditions requires a name change, for example, in Sanatana Dharma, a convert always takes a Sanskrit name to signify the rebirthing process.  Judaism, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, and Sikhism all require or at least advise choosing a name before taking their first step into the process of conversion. and commitment

Anyone serious enough about choosing a magickal name that will do them any good has a lot of work ahead of them. It is neither simple nor easy to correctly choose a name for magickal purposes. It is for this reason that the Buddhists of Japan, tantricists, charge upwards of a million Yen for names for deceased family. These names are intended to prevent return by utilizing long complex names in archaic kanji mostly unpronounceable by laymen.

It is not uncommon for an  individual, especially in certain shamanic/tantric cultures, to have more than a handful of names, given after certain milestone events, for purposes such as abating illness or curses, and for simply having the will to choose a name given a passing of a certain level of spiritual development.

How to Start

Explore different languages and cultures, and examine how they treat names, words and nicknames

As a Mutational Alchemist, I find syncreticism is perfectly acceptable as per the magician’s will, but bear in mind you might catch flak for taking an Egyptian name when you are Irish or Chinese by descent.

Be prepared to defend your choice if confronted. Not everyone accepts the idea that race is a scientific fallacy, (even though it is) and adopting a culture you are not related to by blood has to be done with style and finesse, or people will probably make fun of you.

Decide if you want to keep your magickal name private, to be shared only with other occultists, your own coven/house or yourself, or if it will be a more public name that you use daily on message boards or have legally changed. You can have more than one magickal name.

You should always check the Gematria value of a name via one or another traditionally reputable systems – Hebrew is fine. Explore different spellings to extract the most auspicious form of the name before you decide to take it.

Decide if you would like a well established name or one that is completely unique to you.  There’s no hard rule on this. Aleister Crowley took the name Baphomet as his name in the O.T.O. He became Baphomet 729 towards the end of his reign as Outer Head of the Order.

“I had taken the name Baphomet as my motto in the O.T.O. For six years and more I had tried to discover the proper way to spell this name. I knew that it must have eight letters, and also that the numerical and literal correspondences must be such as to express the meaning of the name in such a ways as to confirm what scholarship had found out about it, and also to clear up those problems which archaeologists had so far failed to solve. “

Aleister Crowley

The magickal name is not a screen name or a nickname that describes some quirk. The name should denote the place you want to get to in some point in the future. It should represent not who you are, but who and what you wish to become. It’s something that you work up to. It’s much better to shoot for the impossible than something  you see as attainable.

Otherwise a magickal name can be anything you like. It may represent knowledge you want to attain, or they represent standards of morality that people want to achieve – dedication, loyalty or any number of things. It calls for an honest level of self analysis and self appraisal to try to ascertain your strengths and weaknesses and figure out where you can strengthen yourself to be a better person and of better service to the Work in general.

Finally, a magickal name is taken on for life. You should feel free to add to it but it is not something that is frivolously discarded. Even if you should do so, a strong and powerful magickal name will continue to haunt you until you acknowledge it or death takes you.

And after you’ve chosen a name, try out some cool graffiti tags with it!
